C-D (Crosby to Dorn)
I’m a great believer in doing things that bring you happiness, if others join in then that’s brilliant, but if not you’re still having a good time and I’m having a good time. These are a few of my memories of meeting a wide variety of people and having the chance (sometimes) to thank them for making the journey of life more enjoyable.
I thank the 80 plus of you who have read the blog and commented.
Today I recall meeting:
Denise Crosby
Robin Curtis
Anthony Daniels
Arthur Darvill
Ted DiBiasie
Chris Doohan
Michael Dorn
Denise Crosby
We share a birthday although you’d never think she was older than me would you? It’s an icebreaker.
Playing Tasha Yar, Ms Crosby's premature departure from Star Trek:The Next Generation was a huge shock, killed by an oil slick. Easy to talk to, on this occasion in Nottingham in 2018, I was accompanied by my godson Richard and he had bought with him his baby son Jay - and guess where Ms Crosby focused her attention? She was lovely.
Robin Curtis
Star Trek:The Wrath of Khan, has long been my favourite Trek movie but I find it hard to watch these days as the actress who played Lt Saavik, (whose name I will not mention) has turned out to be someone who doesn’t have an ounce of Trek values in her. Luckily in Star Trek:The Search for Spock, we were introduced to Robin Curtis now playing the role of Saavik, and she was very good. I can tell you that she really throws herself into the convention spirit and not only poses for photos in her everyday clothes, but brings her Saavik uniform along as well!
Just a lovely lady and I think the fans genuinely love her.
Anthony Daniels
As one of the surviving cast members from Star Wars, I was very keen to meet Anthony Daniels. He didn’t seem keen to meet anyone. Oh well, maybe he was having a bad day.
Arthur Darvill
Now this was one of the best days I ever spent at a convention. 1st June 2019 in Birmingham. It was Arthur Darvill (along with Brandon Routh) that helped make it special. There were long queues of course, which I don’t usually join, but it was worth it. Mr Darvill was signing autographs for fans of Doctor Who and Legends of Tomorrow but when I arrived in front of him, he had to contend with a musical theatre fan too.
We chatted about his current role as Oscar in Sweet Charity and he really did enjoy talking about theatre - I find that actors often prefer to talk theatre than film…well good actors anyway. This was another occasion when someone remembered my name and he introduced me to Brandon Routh. As I say, one of the best days.
Ted DiBiase
I grew up watching the wrestling on World of Sport, Saturday afternoons were always set aside for the likes of Marty Jones and Les Kellett, but then in the early ’80’s we were introduced to the more theatrical world of WWE (or WWF as it was then). Marty Jones and Les Kellett made way for Andre The Giant and Hulk Hogan. I was hooked. I even went to SummerSlam in 1992, which was held at Wembley Stadium. The opening (televised) match was The Legion of Doom (Hawk and Animal) against Money Inc. (Irwin R Shyster and Ted DiBiase). LOD won of course, they were huge fan favourites.
Anyway, shoot forward to 2019 and here’s a chance to meet Mr DiBiase. He was brilliant and still an imposing figure at 65 years of age.
Chris Doohan
My Star Trek journey began in 1969 with the original series. I was hooked from the start and when I started my convention journey, I was determined to meet the surviving cast members and I succeeded. Sadly, I never got to meet DeForest Kelley, Leonard Nimoy or James Doohan.
I ask you to cast your mind back to the days of MySpace, well there was a band I used to follow called The Muddflaps and the lead singer was Chris Doohan, son of James. This was around the time that his dad died and I was able to send condolences and we would exchange occasional chats after that. Fast forward 10 years or so and Chris is making appearances in the new Trek films as well as playing Scotty in Star Trek: Continues. And then he was booked to appear at The Sci Fi Ball. And I was attending. And so we met. And he was every bit as nice as I expected.
Michael Dorn
Lt Commander Worf in Star Trek:The Next Generation. Met him at a Destination Star Trek event where many of his fellow cast mates were also in attendance. They all seem to get along so well.
That’s the D’s completed so next week we move on the E’s and F’s - from Michael Ensign to Brendan Fraser…yes, George of the Jungle.
